Vintage Mirage Casino Las Vegas T-Shirt 90s

The palms are the whole tell. Five of them in pink, yellow, orange and teal, brush-stroked above a white script signature — a South Seas fantasy sold in the middle of the Mojave Desert. That was exactly the pitch.

The Mirage opened November 22, 1989 at a cost of $630 million, the most expensive resort ever built, financed with junk bonds through Michael Milken at a time when Wall Street thought Steve Wynn had lost his mind. It needed to clear a million dollars a day just to service the debt. Forty thousand people walked through the doors in the first half hour, and one of them hit a $4.6 million slot jackpot before the building was ten hours old.

It worked. The volcano out front erupted nightly and free, Siegfried & Roy moved in with the white tigers, and the Mirage’s success set off a $12 billion construction boom that produced the Bellagio, Treasure Island, the Venetian, Mandalay Bay — the Strip as it exists now.

The Mirage closed on July 17, 2024. The ceremony ended with one last eruption of the volcano. This shirt outlasted the building on it.
