Vintage Illinois Fighting Illini Final Four Battle in Seattle T-Shirt 1989

Thirty-one wins and five losses, and a nickname that stuck. Lou Henson’s 1988-89 Illinois team played fast enough that people called them the Flyin’ Illini and meant it as a description rather than a compliment, and they came into Seattle as one of the best teams in the country.

Michigan ended it 83-81 in the national semifinal — thirty-three lead changes, Kenny Battle going for 29 points and 11 rebounds, and the Wolverines taking the title two nights later.

Which is the strange economy of tournament merchandise. Shirts get printed on the way there and sold while it could still go either way, so what survives is a souvenir of the last moment before anyone knew how it ended. Single needle at the hem, a Grumbles tag, and a graphic that calls it the Battle in Seattle.

Printed while it was still possible.
