Hollister Hermosa Jeans Low Rise Bootcut Button Fly Denim Y2K

A pair of Y2K Hollister Hermosa jeans in medium-wash blue cotton denim, low rise, bootcut, with a five-pocket layout and a button fly. The Hermosa was one of Hollister’s anchor fits in the early-to-mid 2000s, and it is impossible to think about that era of American mall denim without thinking about this exact silhouette.

Hollister Co. launched in 2000 as Abercrombie & Fitch’s beach-themed sibling, complete with fabricated 1922 surf-shop origin story, dim lighting, a wall of cologne, and shopping bags featuring people who looked nothing like the average customer. For roughly a decade, Hollister was the dominant force in suburban teenage retail, and their fit blocks — Hermosa, Laguna, Balboa, named after California beach towns most shoppers had never visited — defined how an entire generation thought a pair of jeans was supposed to sit. Low on the hips, slight stack at the boot, button fly that nobody under twenty knew how to operate quickly.

The Y2K denim revival has dragged this exact category back into relevance. What was thrift-store filler five years ago is now actively hunted by collectors who grew up watching MTV and want the real thing rather than a reissue. The button fly Hermosa in a clean medium wash is the platonic ideal of mid-2000s mall denim.

A seagull-logo time capsule from when low-rise was the law of the land.
