Vintage American Girl Place Chicago Shirt 90s
Pleasant Rowland founded American Girl in 1986 on a premise that sounds quaint now — a doll should arrive with a novel, and the novel should teach a child American history. The books did the work; the dolls followed.
American Girl Place opened in Chicago in 1998 at 111 E. Chicago Avenue, and it was not a toy store. Café, salon, doll hospital, a theater — an afternoon you booked rather than an errand you ran. In 2008 the store moved to Water Tower Place, which gave the original location a run of exactly ten years.
Retail shirts tied to a single store are quieter objects than band tees or team merchandise, and they disappear faster. Nobody reprints them and no secondary market forms around them; they simply stop existing as the people who had a reason to keep one stop keeping it.
One address, one decade, embroidered on a chest.
