Vintage Bagel Fest Mattoon Illinois T-Shirt Screen Stars 90s
Mattoon, Illinois built its summer around a bagel. Harry Lender started the family bakery in New Haven in 1927, and decades later the company’s Illinois plant made this Coles County town a place bagels came from — so the town answered with a festival of its own, a Miss Bagelfest pageant and the World’s Biggest Bagel Breakfast.
This shirt went home from the 1990 edition. Screen Stars printed thousands of pieces like it across the decade, the blank that carried more American local memory than any designer label managed, and the single needle at the hem puts it in the window before that construction left domestic production for good.
What makes a shirt like this worth keeping was never the graphic. Somebody stood in a Mattoon street in July, ate a bagel, bought the tee, and wore it long enough that it ended up here.
Small-town festivals printed their history one summer at a time, and most of it survived on cotton or not at all.
