Vintage Levis 501 Blues Jeans T-Shirt 90s

In 1984 Levi’s handed Foote, Cone & Belding a problem: the 501 was stuck. The jean was seen as cowboy wear, and the company needed it to mean something else to young people in cities. Copywriter Mike Koelker and art director Leslie Caldwell answered with “501 Blues” — handheld camera, urban streets, ordinary-looking people who weren’t models, and blues music running under all of it.

Koelker later described the idea plainly: whoever you are, you’re OK. Black or white, thin or heavy, athletic or in a wheelchair. The campaign ran for years, sold an enormous number of jeans, and ended up in the Smithsonian’s permanent collection.

This shirt is the campaign rendered as a graphic — a figure walking in 501s with a guitar slung across, “Levi’s 501 Blues” stacked in script, block, and red type over a blue panel.

The ad that rescued the 501 did it by walking the jean off the ranch and into the city.
