The details tell you more than the label does.
Smile pockets — the curved, piped slash pockets that look like a grin — show up on western shirts from the 1940s onward and are one of the quickest tells that you’re holding something older. Sawtooth flaps, with their pointed notches, are a Rockmount signature that spread across the category. Pearl snaps replaced buttons for a practical reason: a snap gives way if a shirt catches on a saddle horn or a fence post, where a button tears the fabric.
Then there’s the yoke — the panel across the shoulders and chest, often pointed, sometimes piped or embroidered. On better shirts it’s cut on the bias so the fabric moves with the shoulder. Western shirts also run longer in the tail than a standard button-up, because they were made to stay tucked while riding.

Vintage sizing varies considerably between decades and makers, so every shirt here is measured flat by hand — check the measurements rather than the tag size.

A curved slash pocket with a piped or reinforced edge, angled so it resembles a smile. Common on western shirts from the 1940s through the 1970s. It’s a useful dating signal, though reproductions exist — check it against the label, snaps, and stitching rather than treating it as proof on its own.
Safety and practicality. A snap releases under strain instead of tearing the placket, which matters around livestock, tack, and fencing. Pearl and imitation-pearl snaps became standard in the late 1940s and remain a defining feature of the style.
Look at the union label, care tag format, snap style, and fabric composition together — no single element dates a shirt reliably. Shirts predating about 1971 usually have no care tag at all, since care labeling wasn’t required in the US until then. Sanforized markings, single-stitch construction, and all-cotton or cotton-rayon gabardine all point earlier.
Go by the flat measurements listed on each item, not the tag. A vintage large can measure closer to a modern medium, and sizing conventions shifted repeatedly between the 1950s and 1990s. Every shirt on this page has been measured by hand.
